"Ashes Of A Man"

This one is about me coming back home and realizing things weren't the same as when I left. Tried to fix things but life had other ideas. [Verse 1] Heard she moved on just the other day, Guess the silence had too much to say. I’m sittin’ here with this glass in my hand, Tryin’ to drink down what I don't understand. Two kids out there bearin’ my name, But I ain't been there, and I’m the one to blame. The Army made me hard, life made me cold, Now all I got left is stories I’ve told. [Chorus] I drink a bottle just to sleep at night, Smoke two packs just to feel alright. Thought I had control, thought I had a plan— Now I’m just the ashes of a man. The mirror don’t lie, it shows who I am, A ghost in the skin of a broken man. [Verse 2] I gave my best to a war overseas, But back at home, I fell to my knees. Fell outta touch, fell into the dark, Burned down my life tryin’ to reignite a spark. She needed more than a man full of pain, More than a flag and a last name. I came back but never came home, Now I drink 'cause I can't stand bein’ alone. [Chorus] I drink a bottle just to sleep at night, Smoke two packs just to feel alright. Thought I had control, thought I had a plan— Now I’m just the ashes of a man. The mirror don’t lie, it shows who I am, A ghost in the skin of a broken man. [Bridge] Maybe one day I’ll make it right, Find my kids, step back in the light. But tonight this whiskey’s my only friend, And I pray to God this ain't the end. [Final Chorus] I drink a bottle just to sleep at night, Smoke two packs just to feel alright. Used to be strong, used to be proud— Now I’m just a whisper cryin’ out loud. The mirror don’t lie, it shows who I am, Just the ashes of a man.
